Barracuda released findings on “Firewalls and the Cloud” survey

Kuala Lumpur, 9 April 2018 – Barracuda Networks, Inc. (NYSE: CUDA), a leading provider of cloud-enabled security and data protection solutions, today released findings on “Firewalls and the Cloud”, a survey of IT professionals responsible for cloud environment.

Conducted by Dimension Research, this survey comprised of data collected from over 600 respondents who were identified as having security responsibility in environments with significant cloud investments from around the globe including Asia.

Tim Jefferson, Vice President of Public Cloud, Barracuda shares, “Despite concerns about deploying traditional firewalls in the cloud, almost all survey respondents see value in cloud-specific firewall capabilities.”

“74 percent of respondents indicated that integration with cloud management, monitoring and automation capabilities as the most beneficial cloud-specific firewall capability, while 59 percent cited ease of deployment and configuration by cloud developers as the second most beneficial capability.”

Having said these, 56 percent of respondents report that their on-premises security is superior to cloud and security teams are twice as likely to install  Next-Gen Firewall (NGF) on-premises vs. in the cloud. Survey shows that 83 percent have concerns about NGFs in the cloud where the top concerns includes inappropriate pricing and licensing for the cloud.

The survey also looked at how DevOps teams benefits from security automation. Just over half of organizations surveyed have adopted DevOps, DevSecOps, or CI/CD development methodologies (continuous integration and continuous deployment). Of these, 93 percent respondents reported that they have faced challenges when integrating security needs into their processes with “limitations with existing security solutions” being the top challenge at 63 percent.

“We’re continuing to see questions and concerns around how organizations should be approaching security with their cloud deployments, especially from larger companies” adds Jefferson.

“There are a number of reasons for this, but for organizations that are used to operating under traditional data center architecture, moving to the cloud will require a new way of thinking when they approach security. Using security tools specifically designed for the public cloud can actually make a business more secure than they were when they operated purely on-premises” he ends.
