Kirin 980 : Taking Intelligence To The Next Level

Smartphone is the symbol of the modern lifestyle. When everyone is on their smartphones all the time, it’s natural that people would demand for a fluid, responsive experience. The world’s first commercial SoC 7nm chipset, Kirin 980 combines best-in-class performance, efficiency, connectivity features, and Dual NPU AI processing power.

In response to the demand, Huawei integrated the Cortex-A76 and Mali-G76—two new processors that were never before seen in other SoCs—into the Kirin 980. The Mali-G76 supports the world’s fastest DDR pellets with a speed of 4.2Gbs, 14 percent faster than the industry standards. Then, to maximize the performance and efficiency of the SoC, Huawei also designed a new Flex-Scheduling technology for its CPU.

The new A76 cores feature vastly improved performance and efficiency, up 75 percent and 58 percent respectively. Huawei also developed new Kirin CPU subsystem based on the multi-core architecture to further enhance the SoC’s performance and efficiency. In addition to a series of optimizations, the new solution improves the compatibility of various device processes to the CPU, while improving other aspects such as the scheduler and bus design. Kirin CPU enables the SoC to unleash its greatest potential in both performance and efficiency.

Kirin CPU supports Flex-Scheduling technology, which integrates Triple Efficiency Architecture: 2 mega cores (based on Cortex 76), 2 big cores (based on Cortex 76) and 4 small cores (Cortex 55). Comparing the traditional big. LITTLE architecture, it can offer more precise scheduling and realize the best efficiency no matter in intensive workloads, sustained or light activities. The smarter scheduler greatly enhances the efficiency of the SoC in performing everyday tasks and promises a longer battery life while enjoying a better performance.

In terms of GPU, the Mali-G76 embedded within Kirin 980 delivers 46 percent more graphics processing power and 178 percent better power efficiency. Kirin 980 also features an innovative AI clock boosting technology which can intelligently identify the performance bottlenecks by reading the frame rate, frame time, user input and processor workload, and adjust accordingly in real time. The technology works particularly well with games—it works 30 percent better than conventional solutions in predicting the resource utilization of games. By improving the average frame rate and minimizing the stuttering, gamers can enjoy a much smoother gaming experience than ever before.

For instance, when running a AAA gaming title such as NBA 2K18, a Kirin 980-powered device can maintain a near 60fps experience. This level of performance far exceeds the industry standard, and is testament to the GPU’s ability to deliver unparalleled gaming experiences.

Stay tuned for the launch of the first Kirin 980-powered Mate Series device, which is scheduled to arrive in October.
