Scammers using fake SMS offers to steal data…and cash

The public have been advised not to be duped by SMS messages offering free RM100 mobile phone credit, supposedly by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The SMS, bearing the phrase ‘Free RM100 MCMC Redeem Now’ is a tactic by syndicates to obtain personal details of their victims.

MCMC, via its portal ‘sebenarnya.my’ said it has not offered RM100 credit for the public. Checks by the commission showed that clicking on the link would lead users to a homepage, which has an online form.

Users would be prompted to fill up the form in order to supposedly redeem the RM100.

The personal details include full name, mobile phone number, email address, as well as ATM card details, complete with the CCV number and expiry date.

The information would be used by the syndicate to take out money from the victim’s bank account.

MCMC urged the public not to be duped into surrendering their personal information and banking details, and to not share the link to the homepage via social media.
