Govt mulling alternatives for providing broadband service nationwide

The government is looking at several alternatives to improve and expand the broadband network across the country to enable the people to prepare to face the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0).

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the ministry was looking into proposals from several parties including the use of satellites.

“We used to have a National Fiberisation Plan policy which is a plan that focuses on fibre. However, it will take time and a high cost if you want to fiberise a place and we see it is difficult to establish a network in the near future, especially in rural areas.

“The government is looking at other alternatives such as satellite and we are currently studying the proposals of several parties. We have also expressed the desire to change the approach from the fiberisation plan to ‘Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan,” he said in a question-and-answer session at Dewan Rakyat today.

He was answering to a supplementary question from Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) who wanted to know the steps taken by the government to ensure the people received better broadband service.
