185,000 households to enjoy RM40 electricity rebate starting Jan 1

A total of 185,000 households comprising the hardcore poor and the poor will enjoy RM40 electricity rebate, starting from Jan 1.

The Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) Ministry said the rebate under the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate programme was the government’s targeted aid programme for the hardcore poor and the poor who had registered and been verified in the eKasih system as what had been announced in the 2019 Budget on Nov 2.

MESTECC said the programme was new, to be enforced between Jan 1 and Dec 31 next year and to replace the RM20 Electricity Bill Rebate programme, which ended this month.

“If the electricity usage is below RM40 a month, the targeted households will automatically receive electricity bill stating they do not have to pay a single sen.

“But, should the electricity bill surpasses RM40 a month, they only have to pay the remainder after subtracting the RM40 rebate,” said the ministry in a statement today.

In the tabling of the 2019 Budget, the government has announced higher subsidy rate of electricity bill from RM20 to RM40 which involved an allocation of RM80 million which benefited 185,000 accounts.

MESTECC said the electricity bill rebate programme was in line with the government’s intention to safeguard the people’s welfare.
