Sabah CPO: Suspect who held child hostage only said 'Rashid' during standoff

The man who held a two-year-old girl hostage at the Telipok Ria flats on Sunday (Jan 13) only said “Rashid” to police negotiators.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said that throughout the five-hour standoff, the suspect – who is still not identified – had only said one word, which was “Rashid”.

“We want to know who is he and how is he connected to this incident,” he added.

He said police had spoken to the two-year-old victim’s family and he added that they did not know the suspect.

“The neighbours there also have no idea about the identity of the suspect,” Comm Omar said at a press conference here on Monday (Jan 14).

He added that the child was being treated at the Likas Women and Children’s Hospital near here and is in stable condition.

He said they found a mobile phone from the suspect, and will be going through the contact details to determine his identity.

He also said that blood samples have been taken from the suspect to establish whether he was high on drugs when the incident took place.
