Apple Possibly Working on a Cheaper iPhone That You Won’t Be Able to Get

We are only a couple of months away from the moment Apple will take the wraps off its new-generation iPhones, and just like in 2018, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to unveil a trio of models.

But according to a recent report, in addition to successors to the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, Apple could also prepare a cheaper device that would introduce a bunch of significant changes for the iPhone lineup.

First of all, this more affordable model would no longer feature Face ID, as the facial recognition system is one of the most expensive parts of the smartphone. Because of this, Apple reportedly wants to ditch it, which should help substantially reduce the price of the new iPhone.

As a result, this model could come with a fingerprint sensor, so Touch ID would be making a comeback. However, the cited source claims Apple is exploring two different options, one of which could be adding Touch ID to the back of the iPhone in pure Android style.

Specifically aimed at China

The report goes on to claim that this cheaper iPhone with Touch ID support and without Face ID would be specifically aimed at the Chinese market. In other words, it won’t be sold elsewhere, as Apple wants to tackle the growing demand for cheaper phones in China by launching this model to compete against the likes of Huawei and other local brands.

It goes without saying that you should take this report with a pinch of salt, especially because Apple has never limited the availability of such major changes, like the return of a fingerprint sensor, be it embedded into the glass or not, to just one market.

Furthermore, the report claims these downgrades would be aimed at reducing the costs, but a fingerprint reader under the screen would actually be an upgrade that would increase the price even more.
