Apple Wants to Create an iPhone Without Any Ports

Apple’s 2020 iPhone generation is already expected to represent a massive upgrade going forward, and it looks like in the long term, the Cupertino-based tech giant is currently planning several other major changes.

One of them is the removal of the Lightning port, according to leaker Ben Geskin, as Apple wants an iPhone with no ports.

The demise of the Lightning connector would create a series of challenges, not only for Apple, but also for customers, as a Lightning connector is required for basic things like charging and connecting the iPhone to a wired Apple CarPlay unit.

However, it looks like Apple is planning everything in advance, so an iPhone without Lightning would only charge and connect wirelessly to car units. Needless to say, such a change would be a dramatic departure from the current approach on the iPhone, and many buyers might not be pleased with it, especially because other accessories would be required, like wireless chargers.

Notch changes

By on the other hand, this is a long-term plan, and there’s a chance that Apple might actually go for this new design gradually to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Additionally, Geskin says Apple is already testing a series of prototypes for the 2020 iPhone generation, something that makes total sense given we’re in the planning stage of the next model. However, the more interesting tidbit is that some prototypes feature a smaller notch, which could be an indication that the 2020 iPhone could eventually land with more significant design changes.

Previous rumors on the notch claimed that Apple could go as far as giving up on this feature entirely on the 2020 iPhone generation. However, such an approach seems less likely at this point, as Apple is probably just looking into ways to reduce its dimensions rather than kill it off completely.
