Huawei Building a Holistic Ecosystem with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS)

HUAWEI Malaysia Ecosystem Conference 2019

Bringing digital to every person, home, and organisation for a fully connected, intelligent world requires joint effort, and knowledge sharing which will lead to unprecedented growth and value creation for the nation.

Advancing this conversation is HUAWEI Malaysia Ecosystem Conference 2019 (HMEC’19). Hosted by HUAWEI in partnership with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Media Prima, the conference was held at W Kuala Lumpur and officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Haji Eddin Syazlee Shith, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Communication and Multimedia.

“I am urging Malaysians to participate and take advantage of the opportunities given by HUAWEI, a leading global technology company, in which successful apps developed will be given selective cash funding and marketing support,” said Yang Berhormat Tuan Haji Eddin Syazlee Shith.

HMEC is one of the biggest platforms brought together in partnership with MDEC, the organisation that works closely with the app developer ecosystem in Malaysia. Partnering with Media Prima Group, the largest integrated media platform in Malaysia leveraging each other’s strength and expertise proves not only benefitting just the app developers but Malaysians as a whole.

“Malaysia has 20.9 million smartphone users and a household internet penetration rate of 86%. Certainly, there is massive potential to leverage on this growing trend as we continue to expand our app development marketplace. In fact, MDEC believes that app development will be one of the main catalysts in driving the nation’s digital economy in the next few years. With this program, both HUAWEI and Media Prima are bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge, technical competencies, and funding support to the app development sector,” said Norhizam Abdul Kadir, Vice President, Growth Ecosystem Development Division, MDEC.

Present during the conference, Datuk Syed Hussian AlJunid, Chairman, Media Prima Berhad said, “As the country’s largest integrated media network, we understand our audiences’ lifestyles and evolving content consumption habits. Today they prefer being engaged across a multitude of communications touchpoints that include broadcast, digital, social and most importantly mobile apps. To that effect, we have capitalised on our strengths in audience insights and extensive multichannel reach to drive dynamic content and innovative marketing capabilities across all platforms. For example, we leverage on our popular TV programmes such as Ejen Ali, Jalan Jalan Cari Makan (JJCM), Ho Chak! to create fun games and useful lifestyle apps that have become the ‘go-to’ resource for our viewers and digital users. We look forward to sharing our experience and capabilities in this area with a new wave of local developers. We are also excited to work with reputable partners like HUAWEI and MDEC to elevate Malaysia’s app development ecosystem to the next level.”

HUAWEI Mobile Services (HMS)

Gathering over 200 delegates from the government to industry players, business partners and budding app developers, the main highlight of the conference was the introduction of Huawei Mobile Services or also known as HMS.

HUAWEI Mobile Services or HMS is a new and redefined operating system, designed for an all-scenario and intelligent ecosystem. It supports one-time development for multi-device deployment, which will substantially improve app developer’s experience and efficiency” said Kim So Yeon, Marketing Director, HUAWEI Mobile Services APAC.

Engineered with one-stop integration capabilities, HMS promotes cost effectiveness with an extensive global reach. Malaysia app developer community on board the HMS will be part of HUAWEI’s over 560,000 developer community, allowing future developer to reach out to as many as 270 million monthly active users on over 350 million phones globally, including many Malaysians.

With the rapid growth of HUAWEI smartphones, non-smartphone and ecosystem products as well as the massive app distributions of HUAWEI AppGallery to over 14 million users in Asia Pacific, this demands for a redefined ecosystem that will provide a fully connected user experience. HMS with its one-stop integration capabilities, cost effectiveness and extensive global reach, makes it the most ideal tool for the development of this redefined ecosystem.

Kim said “HUAWEI is dedicated to innovating our underlying technologies and tackling pain points with the goal of helping our customers and developers. I hope that the app developer community can leverage on HUAWEI’s communication channel, global platform services and industrial chain resources, as well as support in terms of finance, tool and expertise in creating a new ecosystem through our open platform model.”

HUAWEI Shining Star Program

Malaysia is one of the first countries globally to be part of the HUAWEI Shining Star Program. The program aims to encourage global developer innovation in which HUAWEI has allocated resources amounting to USD1 billion that is invested globally to provide key support for app developers. These includes one-point access and intelligent global distribution for all terminals in all scenarios such as gaming, education, smart home, health related app and others under this program.

To further engage Malaysians interest in App Developing, HUAWEI has introduced The HMS Integration Challenge which is currently held from 23 September 2019 to 31 December 2019. To date, The HMS Integration Challenge have received over more than 30 participants, in the running to receive package valued at RM500,000. The participants are required to complete the HMS Integration Challenge in Mate30 EMUI environment and to publish their app on HUAWEI AppGallery.

The HUAWEI App Developer Scholarship is another effort initiated by HUAWEI to encourage local institutions to build a talent pipeline to ensure industry-ready talents. HUAWEI has awarded RM30,000 scholarships each to University of Malaya and Universiti Teknologi MARA.
