Windows 10 Now Supports Phone Calls Via Android

Microsoft has been working had on getting the Your Phone app ready for prime time, and today the company announced another major improvement: support for making and receiving phone calls is finally available.

Your Phone is basically an easy way to pair a Windows 10 device with an Android phone. In other words, once you do this, you should technically be able to access your Android phone right from the desktop.

Notifications from the Android device are pushed to the Windows 10 desktop, while the photo gallery and messages can be easily accessed from the Your Phone app. Furthermore, the app also features screen mirroring capabilities, technically making it possible to work on an Android device without even touching it.

The end of Microsoft’s Windows phones

Support for making phone calls from a Windows 10 device via an Android phone comes only a day after the Redmond-based software giant officially retired Windows 10 Mobile once and for all.

With the final update shipped on December 10, Windows 10 Mobile is now an unsupported platform, and further improvements and security patches would no longer be published.

Microsoft won’t roll out a replacement to Windows 10 Mobile just yet, although many think that Windows 10X could evolve to get closer to a mobile platform itself. Windows 10X is an operating system specifically built for dual-screen and foldable devices, but for some reason, it’s not powering Microsoft’s very own dual-screen smartphone called Surface Duo.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft will at one point re-release a mobile OS, but for now, the company is betting big on Android and on solutions like Your Phone that make Google’s operating system the preferred choice when it comes to using Windows 10 on the desktop.
