Microsoft to Release New Windows 10 Cumulative Updates Today

Microsoft will release new Windows 10 cumulative updates later today as part of the March 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle, and as it happens every month, all versions of the operating system will get a little something to fix vulnerabilities and other non-security bugs.

At this point, only Windows 10 version 1809, 1903, and 1909 continue to receive updates for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations SKUs, while the other versions are still services either as part of the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) or for Enterprise and Education editions.

Windows 10 version 1809 is the next one to exit support on May 12, 2020 for consumers, but it’ll continue to get updates until May 11, 2021 for Enterprise and Education SKUs.

Today’s cumulative updates, however, will be mostly aimed at fixing security vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and the pre-installed apps.

Security patches

Since these will mostly resolve security issues, Microsoft recommends users to patch their devices as soon as possible. But on the other hand, cumulative updates are known for causing various problems on devices where they are installed, including failed installs and other post-installation glitches, so many might just decide to wait for a little bit longer until enough data on update reliability becomes available.

Microsoft has tried to further refine the experience with cumulative updates in the last few months, but this doesn’t necessarily mean everything is working as planned.

In fact, issues with cumulative updates were experienced even in February after Microsoft rolled out last month’s patches, so it remains to be seen if everything goes right in March.

Full information on the contents of each update will be published later today after the rollout starts, and users will be provided with the new cumulative updates on their Windows 10 devices in Windows Update.
