Facebook has just launched official Messenger desktop clients for Windows 10 and macOS as the social network sees a spike in usage due to the lockdown caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
With millions of people staying at home these days, the usage of Internet services has increased substantially, and Facebook says WhatsApp and Messenger themselves recorded a huge boost since the pandemic started.
This is because communication apps are being used by Internet users to stay in touch with family, friends, and coworkers, and Facebook says it’s working around the clock to prevent any connection issues.
The desktop Messenger apps are supposed to make staying in touch with contacts much easier, as they include standard messaging, group video calls, notification support, and synchronization across mobile and desktop.
The two desktop clients also come with a dark mode and GIF support on both supported platforms.
Only available in the app stores, older Windows not supported
Facebook is releasing the new Messenger desktop apps in the two app stores belonging to Microsoft and Apple – in other words, this means the client can’t be installed on an older version of Windows, such as Windows 7 for example.
“Now more than ever, people are using technology to stay in touch with the people they care about, even when physically apart. Over the past month, we saw more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger. Now with apps for MacOS and Windows, the best of Messenger is coming to desktop, including unlimited and free group video calls,” Stan Chudnovsky, VP of Messenger, explains.
