This Is the iPhone Update We’ll Never Get (But Which Everybody Wants)

Apple’s new iOS 14 software update is expected in September, and while the company itself doesn’t typically discuss the changes until the preview shown at WWDC, some tidbits have already leaked to provide us with an early look at a bunch of features.

One of them is widgets on the home screen, something that would make the iPhone overall more dynamic, while also improving the way we interact with apps in iOS.

While details on this are still very vague, an iOS 14 concept published by Hacker 34 on YouTube imagines the whole thing in a way that will never see daylight. All alongside other new features that everybody would love to have on their iPhones but which Apple is very unlikely to ever make happen.

Hello, widgets!

In addition to the new widgets, which look totally yummy in this video, the concept also envisions an updated dock with drag and drop support, split screen on the iPhone, and even a picture-in-picture mode.

These are all features that are already available in the Android ecosystem and which Apple users have been drooling after for many years. But of course, you’d better not hold your breath for such improvements, despite iOS 14 itself likely to bring several major new features.

While the new software update will go live for supported iPhones in the fall, most likely in the second half of September, Apple is expected to share a demo of the operating system at the WWDC in June. A public beta should also be released shortly after the conference, so technically, we’ll know what to expect several months before the update gets the go-ahead.

It remains to be seen how many surprises iOS 14 will bring, but for now, it’s better not to expect anything that gets too close to what we’re seeing in this concept.
