  1. First words : "Apple is not known for reinventing the wheel often."
    Uhm….. It's the only computer manufacturer to ever swith cpu architecture? And it's done it twice ? In comparison to all the other computer manufacturers out there ever they have reinvented the wheel twice more.. Actually twice more than all the other ones combined, cause they've all just driven their platform to its end and faded away instead of switching architecture, cause switching architecture kinda means you lose most of your customers.. Which is why Windows is still just a huge shitpile of legacy trash bundled in a sluggish OS. Switching CPU architecture TWICE in 20 years is fucking nuts. That's not just reinventing the wheel, it's changing the lug nut configuration in a way that makes you have to swap out your fucking hubs and probably your brakes and everything. If they reinvented the wheel more often than this, it would be a useless platform, cause you'd find no devs to develop for that platform.. And then all the customers go away.

    Now, I wouldn't say that any of the other computer manufacturers reinvent the wheel often either, but to single out Apple as not being an innovator kinda makes every other computer manufacturer look like they're in suspended animation or straight up just sitting around counting dollar bills while Intel does their job poorly.

    This is Apple saying to the industry "Know what? Your CPUs are stale as fuck(I agree), there's hardly any improvement, and we're running them hot as fuck to even squeeze any power out of these chips.. Fuck yall, it's time for the future." And somehow Linus was like "UNIMPRESSIVE!" and I'm like "I don't even have a mac and I'm fairly impressed by the fact that they one-upped Intel on their first go…"

    What does it take for Apple to impress Linus? Psychiatric counceling to get him past his fanboyism/instinctual brand-hatred, or undeniable stats he can't bend to his will no matter how hard he tries. "The new macs do not heat up my room like the old ones, that's a negative!"

  2. Linus why do you compare synthetic single thread benchmarks between a CPU with hyperthreading and a CPU with no such architecture? Of course the CPU with HT logic will loose much performance simply because it's instruction pipeline is constructed to ideally calculate two operations at once. But Benchmarks are not suited for handling single CPU core load and therefore a HT CPU looses about 20-30% of it's efficiency when working under single THREAD load

  4. Rosetta 2 is not an emulator – it's a trans compiler.

    On first run it loads x65 binary code segments and transcompiles them into Apple Silicon AArch64 code, storing the new binaries in the app like Universal 2 does before running the new code. This means there's a performance penalty on first run, but thereafter the performance penalty is something like a consistent 25-30% due to the trans compiler not having the original source code which can be optimized further.

  5. Thunderbolt was jointly developed by Intel and Apple. Thunderbolt 4 is (I think) basically fully implemented Thunderbolt 3 – which Apple has always done unlike OEM PC makers which for the most part cheaped out and didn't deliver all the options. Since the transport protocol is the same, the rest of Thunderbolt 4 appear to be on the host end in the Thunderbolt stack, so with the arrival of Big Sur (macOS 11.0.1), most Macs supporting Thunderbolt 3 now have Thunderbolt 4 – and can use things like Thunderbolt hubs.

    Most people are looking at these first Apple Silicon Macs wrong – these aren't Apple's powerhouse machines: they're simply the annual spec bump of the lowest end Apple computers with DCI-P3 displays, Wifi 6, and the new Apple Silicon M1 SoC.

    They have the same limitations as the machines they replace – 16 GB RAM and two Thunderbolt ports.

    These are the machines you give to a student or teacher or a lawyer or an accountant or a work-at-home information worker – folks who need a decently performing machine with decent build quality who don't want to lug around a huge powerhouse machine (or pay for one for that matter). They're still marketed at the same market segment, though they now have a vastly expanded compute power envelope.

    The real powerhouses will probably come next year with the M1x (or whatever). Apple has yet to decide on an external memory interconnect and multichannel PCIe scheme, if they decide to move in that direction.

    Other CPU and GPU vendors and OEM computer makers take notice – your businesses are now on limited life support. These new Apple Silicon models can compete speed-wise up through the mid-high tier of computer purchases, and if as I expect Apple sells a ton of these many will be to your bread and butter customers.

    In fact, I suspect that Apple – once they recover their R&D costs – will be pushing the prices of these machines lower while still maintaining their margins – while competing computer makers will still have to pay Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and nVidea for their expensive processors, whereas Apple's cost goes down the more they manufacture. Competing computer makers may soon be squeezed by Apple Silicon price/performance on one side and high component prices on the other. Expect them to be demanding lower processor prices from the above manufacturers so they can more readily compete, and processor manufacturers may have to comply because if OEM computer manufacturers go under or stop making competing models, the processor makers will see a diminishing customer base.

    I believe the biggest costs for a chip fab are startup costs – no matter what processor vendors would like you to believe. Design and fab startup are expensive – but once you start getting decent yields, the additional costs are silicon wafers and QA. The more of these units Apple can move, the lower the per unit cost and the better the profits.

    So … who should buy these M1 Macs?

    If you're in the target demographic – the student, teacher, lawyer, accountant, or work-at-home information worker – this is the Mac for you.

    If you're a heavy computer user like a creative and don't simply want a light and cheap computer with some additional video and sound editing capability for use on the go – I'd wait for the M1x (or whatever) next year. You'll probably kick yourself next year when the machines targeted at you finally appear.

    It’s sort of annoying because instead of making a great product I feel like apple products are always coming with caveats I don’t like.
    I’ve have a lot of different varieties of apple and love it but as the years go by I feel like they are becoming more shaky 🤷🏽‍♂️

  8. i went to JB hi fi and used new M1 for few minutes, if apple just adds 120hz pro motion and make bezel thin,trust me a lot of people going to switch from windows to mac. The fact macOS comes with iWork apps like pages, numbers which i find sometimes better than Microsoft office and privacy like inbuilt filecault, encrypting folders and all make them cheaper than other manufacturers. Apple is future.

  9. So someone disagreeing with you automatically makes them an "Apple Fan"? I run Unraid/Windows/Linux and have a Macbook Air in my office and don't have a strong preference in hardware/OS. There have been plenty of A13-A14 bionic benchmarks that hinted on the expected performance of the M1. If anything, you're the one who were dismissive and jumped the gun.

  10. Apple designed the cpu for media production locating dedicated hardware encoding support of 264 and 265 in the CPU. Also the installed apps preload in the background on boot so it pops up immediately.

  11. By default WoW will automatically cap itself at 60 fps whether or not v-sync is enabled or disabled. In the WoW options menu you need to go to System->Advanced and adjust the "Max Foreground FPS" slider.

  13. This comment is addressed directly to Linus – In the M1 launch, they had already, specifically stated that "When it comes to low power silicon, M1 is the world's fastest CPU core." Apple is not taking back ANY words. This is what they had always said. You are biased when it comes to Apple, admit it.

  14. I love my Mac Mini the trick is just finding a good display. I suggest everyone avoid DELL displays for use with Macs as they seem to create a terrible fuzzy blurry quality to them.. I would recommend forking out the cash for a LG UltraSharp that Apple recommends which includes speakers, camera & microphone.

  15. WoW has a frame limiter enabled by default on the advanced tab. That's probably why it was locked to 60 fps cap. Also agree you guys shouldn't use it as a benchmark at all because of the breadth of situations that running around the starting area isn't indicative of real game performance.

  16. Sometimes Linus do talk like graph without markings. Apple doesn’t want developers to continue with old x86 apps. If they say Rosetta is so good then nobody would care to release a arm/m1 version quickly
